JIZO STATUE AT THE ZOJOJII TEMPLE

It is common for temples to offer Jiz? statues for a fee, which are then dressed in red bibs and caps, and displayed in the temple yard. This is part of Mizuko Kuyo, a practice which allows women to grieve for departed children through abortion, stillbirth or miscarriage.
